Surrendering every hour of our week and every area of our life to the Lord.

Stories to Warn Us

Unfortunately there are too many stories about churches, pastors, and boards that have used their positions of power, not only to sin against those they should have cared for, but then afterwards have looked the other way or have dug in their heels and refused to admit any wrong. Every time that happens, it further erodes the credibility of the Christian church as a whole, and even more importantly, it disgraces the name of Jesus Christ. These stories shouldn't make us wag our finger in disgust. Rather they should serve as warnings of our own frailty.

1 Corinthians 10:11-12 NIV

11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come. 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!

168?

168 = the number of hours in a week
24 hours in a day x 7 days a week

No matter who we are, we all get the same number of hours in our week. So how does our faith in Jesus Christ fit into those 168 hours?

"One hour a week" mindset

We isolate faith from the rest of our life.
We view religion as laws to keep.
Our motivation is one of guilt.
It leads to a fearful & cautious attitude with God
When we blow it, we hide in shame.

168 kind of faith

We integrate our faith with the rest of our life.
We view religion as love to experience.
Our motivation is one of grace.
It leads to a grateful & free attitude with God.
When we blow it, we confess in honesty.

John 3:16 NIV

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

1 John 1:8-9 NIV

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Live 168: every hour, every area

To “Live 168” means surrendering to the Lordship of Jesus every hour of my week and every area of my life.

My faith in Jesus is integrated into the rest of my life not isolated from it.

Colossians 3:17 NIV

17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

168: Personal Application

If a 168-kind-of-faith means surrendering to the Lordship of Jesus every hour of our week and every area of our life, then it means we need to let go of those things we’re trying to keep away from Him. That's not meant to be a guilt trip, but rather an invitation to more life than we've ever known before. God wants to bring His grace into those areas of our lives we’re tempted to hide from Him. Some examples could be: relationships, finances, secrets, or maybe it's something else. What area do you need to surrender to the Lord?

168: Church Application

When we’re willing to push past the boundaries of one hour on a Sunday and the physical walls of the place we worship, God can do amazing things in us and through us. Recently we've rejoiced with others in baptism. We've served our community. We've celebrated the ministry of Open Table. Let's be known for stories like these. We’re just beginning to scratch the surface of what God can do with a church that’s committed to living 168 for Him.
